Certified Fund Specialist®
The designation for advisors who want deep, practical knowledge of mutual funds, ETFs, and managed portfolios. What you actually need to know when a client asks you to explain their fund’s expense ratio.
What you will learn
Advisors recommend funds every day, but few can explain why one fund costs more than another, how a bond fund behaves when rates rise, or what actually drives the difference between active and passive returns. The CFS® program closes that gap. Across 21 chapters, you will build a working knowledge of mutual funds, ETFs, closed-end funds, REITs, and alternatives that goes well beyond product labels.
When you finish, you will know how to evaluate a fund’s total cost of ownership, compare fee structures across share classes, read risk metrics the way portfolio managers do, build diversified allocations by client risk profile, and explain every decision in language your clients understand. This is the designation that turns fund selection from a catalog exercise into a skill.
“The readings and material associated with the CFS was on-point and highly interesting. As I teach an investment course at UM-Dearborn, I will incorporate several of the concepts and applications into the course material. Thanks to the IBF staff for all their help and support.”
